Distinguished and Famous people from Victor Harbor
⛵ Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin
Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin met off the South Australian coast on 8 April 1802 while charting it from opposite directions. Flinders commanded Investigator; Baudin commanded Le Géographe. The first approach was cautious: Flinders prepared for possible action while displaying a flag of truce, and Baudin initially thought the approaching vessel might be his missing companion ship. The encounter became a peaceful exchange of information between exploration expeditions. Flinders boarded the French vessel to speak with Baudin. Their meeting gave Encounter Bay its familiar name and left the Victor Harbor district with a lasting chapter in maritime history.
⚓ Richard Crozier
Richard Crozier commanded HMS Victor when it anchored near Granite Island in April 1837. His visit is associated with the naming of Victor Harbor after the ship, a connection later commemorated by a tablet on the island. The settlement's name subsequently passed through the familiar Port Victor usage before Victor Harbor became official in the twentieth century. Confusion with Port Victoria on Yorke Peninsula helped bring the naming question back into focus. Crozier's association was a naval visit with a lasting place-name legacy, rather than a claim that he settled in the town.
🎨 Hans Heysen
Hans Heysen is strongly associated with the Adelaide Hills, but the coast near Victor Harbor also entered his work. His Petrel Cove watercolour dates from 1925, and a photograph in the Art Gallery of South Australia's collection shows him sketching outdoors at the Bluff around 1926. Together they capture an artist studying a different South Australian landscape from his celebrated gums and pastoral scenes. The sea, exposed headland and rocky shore offered their own subjects. His local connection is the work of a visiting artist, recorded in both an artwork and an image of him at work.
